Course Description
In this workshop with Argentinian painter Melisa Calabria, students will learn the art of the self-portrait, with an emphasis on exploring the portrait as a vehicle for storytelling.
Influenced by her own teachers Richard Celma and Odd Nerdrum, Melisa’s course combines both the practical study of painting lifelike self-portraits, with philosophical discussions that address the questions of why we as painters feel compelled to create.
Over the course of four days, Melisa will guide guide her students through the process of developing an idea from a compositional sketch, to realizing this vision in oils on canvas. Working from a mirror, students will be encouraged to combine technical proficiency with elements of narrative in their work as they paint their own portrait.
In addition to in-depth individual feedback, Melisa will provide demonstrations on drawing, painting, and preparation of a traditional canvas ground. This course combines both the practical study of how to paint with oils, with philosophical discussion that addresses the questions of what we as painters are driven to express.Tuition
