Course Description
In this course led by classically trained painter Igor Naskalov, students will learn the portrait painting techniques of Frans Hals. Not only was Frans Hals one of the most important painters of the Dutch Golden Age, but the DARA school is located in Hals' city of Haarlem (within short walking distance of the Frans Hals Museum!)
Class begins with a historical lecture from Igor, who will guide his students through an in-depth exploration of different European approaches to portrait painting. For the rest of the first morning of class, students will prepare their canvas and apply a preliminary drawing of their chosen Frans Hals painting.
Igor will instruct his students step-by-step through the process of recreating a painting in the method of Frans Hals, learning the essential qualities of traditional Dutch painting: accuracy, rhythm, light effect and the illusion of form and space. Students will also learn to achieve a phenomenally broad range of color effects with a limited palette, focusing on color harmony and unity of light.
This course is designed to increase the student's technical skill and accuracy, whether you are an experienced painter or a beginner. Although this course focuses on portraiture, the knowledge gained is applicable to every form of artistic expression of Frans Hals and his signature style of painting.Tuition
