Course Description
In this course led by classically trained painter Igor Naskalov, students will learn the oil painting techniques of French landscape painters Claude Lorrain and Hubert Robert. Both of these masterful painters are renowned for their classical and monumental compositions, which were aided by their prolific drawing studies made directly from nature.
Following a historical lecture by Igor, students will work step-by-step through the process of recreating a landscape painting by one of these two artists: from canvas preparation, to palette organization, to application of different oil paint mediums through every layer of the painting process.
In addition to learning about the drawing methods and palette used by Lorrain, Robert, and their contemporaries, Igor will also lead daily discussions about landscape composition and atmospheric perspective: from capturing different outdoor lighting effects that depend on the position of the sun above the horizon, to creating depth through grouping elements of the environment into planes.
By the end of the course, students will have each completed one highly refined master copy of the landscape painting of their choice. The technical skills developed in this courses will enable students to achieve more luminosity and atmosphere in their own personal oil paintings.Tuition
