Course Description
The Dutch Golden Age painter Rembrandt van Rijn is renowned for his use of chiaroscuro, or the dramatic contrast between light and dark. This technique was employed to create a powerful "spotlight" effect that was especially popular during the Baroque period.
In this five-day workshop led by Dutch painter Thomas Langeveld, students choose to work from one high-quality reproduction of a figure or portrait painting by Rembrandt, and will study the master's methods by closely reproducing their chosen painting.
Rembrandt is widely admired for his lively and theatrical paintings, brought to life through a complex interplay of thick, sculpted impastos and transparent, mysterious shadows. More than just copying a Rembrandt painting, the thoughtfulness and virtuosity evident in Rembrandt's work are qualities that Thomas will encourage his students to experience in this workshop.
Through step-by-step demonstrations and individual instruction, Thomas will guide students towards a deeper understanding of the traditional Dutch approach to oil painting, which will help strengthen the student's personal painting practice.Tuition
