Course Description
Are you new to oil painting and curious how to get started? Or perhaps you already have some experience with the medium, but would like to broaden your technical knowledge? This workshop is ideal for you!
Combining discussions on technique and theory with practical application, the aim of this course is to equip artists with fundamental skills needed to fully explore the beautiful medium of oil painting, using the modest genre of the still life as an avenue to paint fully from life at a high level of ability.
Over the course of 30 hours of instruction, classically trained painter Mischa Tranquilli will guide students through the following skills:- Technical properties and correct usage of oil painting tools - from pigments, to oil paint mediums, to painting supports, and more;
- Best practices for working safely with toxic materials;
- The purpose of toning a canvas and how to apply this to your work effectively;
- Understanding the so-called "fat over lean" rule (and why "flexible over inflexible" may be a more accurate understanding);
- What causes "sinking in" and how to remedy it without damaging your paintings;
- Basic Munsell color theory, and how to apply this to an efficient palette system for accurate color mixing;
- Strategies for painting from live observation (meaning, not from photos), using "poster studies" to plan effective compositions
- Completion of a refined still life painting fully from life, built up in 3 layers
The course begins with an in-depth lecture covering a wide range of technical topics: from understanding how to read the label on a tube of oil paint, learning the differences between various types of painting mediums, the purpose of applying an imprimatura, and much more. During the first two days, students will complete simple tonal and color exercises to become familiar with the basics of effective color mixing and paint application.
Starting from the third day, students will apply everything they have learned to painting a traditional still life, using a three-layer painting approach. Having completed this project, students will develop a critical understanding of how to paint effectively from life, which will strengthen their personal artistic practice.Tuition
