Course Description
In this five-day workshop with Patrick Byrnes, artists will employ a limited palette inspired by the great Swedish painter Anders Zorn to make portrait paintings from the live model.
With just four pigments — Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, and Ivory Black— students will discover how to achieve a surprisingly expansive range of colors through careful modulations of hue, value, and chroma. Patrick will teach students strategies for interpreting the subtle colors we perceive in human flesh, and replicating these qualities using Zorn's limited palette.
With lessons comprised of both faster color studies and sketches (ranging from 20 to 180
minutes), as well as one sustained 18- hour pose, this workshop is geared towards painters looking to gain confidence in painting from life, and improve their color mixing, drawing, and paint handling.
Patrick will guide students with daily demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques
throughout each stage of the process: from creating a strong likeness to the model with an accurate drawing, to color mixing, to modeling form and finishing details. Munsell color theory, cranial anatomy, the physics of light, and correct use of oil painting materials will also be discussed throughout each session.Tuition
