  • Course Description

    In this master class with acclaimed portrait artist Oliver Sin, students will learn to make competent portrait drawings from life. Through step-by-step demonstrations, Oliver will help students to better understand the structure of the face in terms of shapes, plane changes, and value through the use of lines and tonal rendering.

    Over the course of 30 hours of instruction, students will learn the techniques of mastering expressive portraiture drawings with vine charcoal on white drawing paper, as well as pastel pencils on toned paper, all fully from live models. Oliver will offer lectures on a wide array of topics, including artistic anatomy, proportion, form, and how to effectively convey mood.

    Oliver shares over 20 years of professional teaching experience with his students, providing hands-on instruction with a strong knowledge in breaking down the drawing process. ​

  • Tuition

    The cost of tuition for this course is € 875, which includes 30 hours of instruction from live models.

    Also included with the cost of tuition:
    • Complimentary lunch. Meals are light, healthy & homemade. This typically consists of toasted sandwiches, soups, grilled vegetables, salad bowls, etc. Menu changes daily.
    • Coffee, tea, light snacks during all hours
    • End-of-workshop borrel / aperitif (light alcoholic & non-alcoholic drinks, light snacks & bites) 
    • Studio equipment - easels, drawing boards, stools

    All other expenses (such as accommodation, travel fare, drawing & painting supplies) are not included.

    ​Payment Deadlines
    Deposit
    A deposit payment is due within 14 days of acceptance into the course in order to reserve your place. This can be paid in one of two ways:
    • Monthly Installments: When there are more than 6 months before the start of the workshop, tuition fees can be split into six monthly payments. The first installment is charged at checkout. 3% interest is added when paying in monthly installments.
     
    • Two Installments: The first half of tuition is paid as a deposit to hold your place in the class. The second half is due 30 days before the start of the workshop.

    Are there fewer than 30 days before the start of the workshop?
    The full tuition fee is due within 5 working days in order to reserve your place in the class.

    If there are fewer than 5 days from the start of class, tuition fees must be paid in full before the workshop begins.

  • Course Materials

    ​The following materials are required for participation in this course.


    CHARCOAL & PENCILS
    • 3 sticks willow charcoal, 6mm or wider
    • 3 sticks extra soft vine charcoal, 6mm or wider (optional)
    • 4B and 6B graphite drawing pencils
    • White pastel pencil
    • Charcoal pencil

    ​DRAWING TOOLS
    • Kneaded eraser
    • Final fixative spray for charcoal/pastel
    PAPER
    • A pad of white drawing paper, minimum A2 size, medium-texture surface (not too smooth), 100 gsm or heavier
      • Oliver personally uses Strathmore paper​
    • 2 sheets of toned grey paper, minimum A2 size, medium-texture surface
    • A pad of tracing paper, A4 size

  • Location

    Have you followed a workshop with us before? Please note that all 2024 workshops will take place in our new studio building at: Zuider Emmakade 45, 2012 KN Haarlem.

    Our new location is in the same neighbourhood as our previous building, and easily accessible via public transport.

Recommended Level

Oliver will give live demonstrations each morning, ranging from fundamental skills to more advanced drawing concepts.

​That said, previous experience drawing from life is recommended to fully benefit from this class.

Oliver Sin
Oliver is an internationally renowned figurative artist, who has over 20 years of professional teaching experience at the Academy of Fine Arts University, San Francisco. Portraiture is his favorite form of expression, both as an art professor and in his own studio practice.
