Tobias Berman is a figurative artist from the Netherlands. Although he has always been active with drawing, he only seriously took up painting at the age of 17. He has studied throughout Europe, chasing the knowledge offered by numerous world-renowned classical art institutes and instructors, including the Swedish Academy of Realist Art, the Florence Academy of Art, and the Barcelona Academy of Art, from which he graduated.
His studies at the Swedish Academy of Realist Art taught him all the subtleties of the art of drawing, while the Florence Academy of Art provided the backdrop for his introduction into oil painting. Finally, he honed and further improved his oil painting technique at the Barcelona Academy of Art, and graduated from their core programme. With the knowledge he accumulated throughout these various ateliers, he has spent the last years experimenting with different techniques and ways of working. Tobias' work ranges from a very careful, multi-layered painting approach akin to the methods of the 16th and 17th century old masters, to a more expressive, impressionistic way of working. His primary focus is on the figure, the portrait, and the plein-air landscape. He always tries to have an interaction between the painting and what he sees, searching for a careful balance and play of focus throughout his work. His work has exhibited in various group shows throughout Europe. Currently, he is based in Arnhem where he has his studio, and teaches portraiture to beginners in Utrecht. |
