THÉRÈSE SCHWARTZE
In this lecture, sociologist, curator, and writer Cora Hollema discusses the fascinating life of portrait painter Thérèse Schwartze (1851-1918). Schwartze was raised in Amsterdam by a German-American migrant family. From the age of five, the gifted young girl was trained by her ambitious father, himself an accomplished painter. Her refined technique and business acumen delivered her many clients from the high society, including the Dutch royal court, which commissioned her for portraits. Schwartze’s talent, training, and unremitting energy led her to international fame and a vast fortune, provoking envy, astonishment, and censure. Hers is the story of a unique career and a remarkable personality ahead of her time.
The studio doors open at 17:00 for a welcome apéritif, in which drinks (wine and non-alcoholic beverages), light food and snacks are served. Cora's lecture begins at 17.45, with a brief intermission from 18.30 - 18.45, and ends with a question and answer session. Parking is free and is available directly in front of the studio building.
