Top: Examples of student work from Thomas's previous Rembrandt workshops at DARA.
- Recommended level: all levels are welcome. Students in this workshop will choose to paint one figure from Rembrandt's Nightwatch, and the student's suggested skill level for each figure is indicated in the course registration.
The Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden, 1606) is renowned for his use of chiaroscuro, or the dramatic contrast between light and dark. This technique came to be known as tenebrism, and was employed to create a dramatic "spotlight" effect that was especially popular during the Baroque period.
In this 5-day workshop led by core DARA instructor Thomas Langeveld, students will work from a high-quality reproduction of Rembrandt’s most famous painting: The Nightwatch. Besides its extraordinary size, the painting is most famous for its masterful composition and powerful use of tenebrism, displaying a dramatic contrast between shadows and light. Rembrandt was only in his thirties when he started this Schuttersstuk, a genre of Dutch Golden Age painting depicting the group portraits of civic guards. Although this was his only contribution to the genre, The Nightwatch is the most famous.
Over the course of 30 hours of instruction, Thomas will guide his students through the step-by-step process of completing a master copy of one of the figures depicted in the painting, working as closely as possible according to the traditional painting approach that Rembrandt would have used. Starting with a monochrome underpainting on a dark toned canvas, students learn how to create dramatic light, shadow, and texture in their underpaintings, with thick impastos worked into the lights and the first applications of color added into the background. Once the underpainting is finished, the flesh tones are applied with thin glazes, allowing the luminosity of the underpainting to show through.
Thomas will provide in-depth demonstrations, critique, and hands-on instruction to his students, guiding students of all levels through the process of a traditional academic study. - INCLUDED MATERIALS: DARA provides students with the following:
- Primed & prepared fine-weave linen canvas (the size depends on the student’s chosen painting)
- Cobalt drier
- Powdered calcium carbonate
The following materials are required for participation in this workshop.
