Although Sargent is best known for his society portraits, Italy remained central throughout his life and career. Born in Florence, he returned to Italy repeatedly, finding artistic freedom and experimentation in places such as Capri, Venice, and Tuscany. Away from the demands of commissioned portraiture, he created some of his most personal and innovative work.
This lecture, presented by classically trained Dutch painter Fleur Sille, explores Sargent's Italian journeys through his paintings, watercolours, and artistic practice. We will look closely at how he captured light, landscape, and atmosphere, and how his technique shifted across regions: from the brilliance of Capri to the quieter, more structured landscapes of Tuscany.

Fleur SilleFleur Sille is a Dutch artist from Assen, and drawing has been her passion for as long as she can remember. She started painting at the age of fifteen, and was admitted to the Florence Academy of Art's diploma programme the following year. She graduated at age nineteen, and was awarded the fourth year resident artist prize, as well as a position as assistant teacher at the academy.
Fleur's work has gained wide recognition and was honoured with the "Best Figure Painting of Second Year" award by the Florence Academy of Art. In 2023, she won first prize in the Art Renewal Center's International Scholarship Competition. During her studies in Florence, Fleur developed a deep interest in the work of John Singer Sargent and his long, evolving relationship with the country. |
Studio doors open at 18:15 for a welcome reception, and Fleur's lecture and Q&A session begins at 19:00. Parking is free and is available directly in front of the studio building.
