Preparing for a Portrait Commission: A Live Demonstration

Visiting artist Thibault Barrère

​Through a live painting demonstration accompanied by commentary on his process and methods, French artist Thibault Barrère will share key insights from his professional practice as an artist who paints portraits on commission.

He will address a typical situation in which the artist visits the person to be portrayed at their own location, and reflect on helpful practices for painting from life outside of the studio environment.

Beginning with a discussion about the value of quick sketches made from life, Thibault will demonstrate his approach to painting from a live model, showcasing his techniques in painting alla prima. He will cover subjects such as developing a focus for the commissioned work, his materials and palette, and the experience of collaborating with art collectors. Throughout, Thibault will also take questions from the audience.

This will be an invaluable opportunity for artists interested in their own development as professional portrait painters, as well as the skilled amateur who wishes to expand their creative practice. All are welcome!

​Studio doors open at 17:30 for a welcome reception, and Thibault's demonstration begins at 18:00. Parking is free and is available directly in front of the studio building.
