Oil Painting Materials:

A Practical Guide for Painters
Understanding your materials is the foundation of confident, controlled, and expressive oil painting.

Frustration in painting often stems from uncertainty about how paints, mediums, or brushes behave, and experiencing unpredictable outcomes in your work. When you truly understand your tools of the trade as an oil painter, your work becomes more controlled and far more rewarding, allowing you to realise your creative vision to the fullest.

This lecture with DARA co-founder Thomas Langeveld is designed for both beginning oil painters seeking clarity and direction, and experienced artists who want to refine and strengthen your technical skills. Thomas will provide a clear and practical foundation in oil painting materials, covering:

  • The difference between student and professional-grade paints, and how to choose the right paints for you;
  • How various pigments behave differently, and why that matters in your work;
  • The role of painting mediums, and how to use them safely and effectively;
  • Paintbrush types, and their influence on mark-making and specific painting techniques;
  • Different types of painting supports (canvas, panel, etc.) and how to prepare them properly;
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Whether your approach is classical, painterly, or experimental, a deeper understanding of your materials allows you to paint with intention rather than guesswork.

Invest in your technical foundation and transform the way you work. Reserve your place and join us for an informative and practical evening that will support your artistic growth!

Thomas Langeveld is a Dutch artist from Haarlem. After relocating to Italy to pursue an education in classical drawing and painting at the Angel Academy of Art, Thomas eventually returned to his hometown and co-founded DARA in 2018.

His art has exhibited in solo shows and group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Belgium, United States, and Italy, and has been sold  in private collections throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. Most recently, Thomas's work was awarded as a finalist in the Art Renewal Center's 18th International Salon.

Thomas is passionate about the traditional craft of oil painting, which he sees as a means to facilitate creative development. Technical skill development in painting features regularly in Thomas's classes in DARA's Trimester Programme.

Studio doors open at 18:15 for a welcome reception, and Thomas's lecture and Q&A session begins at 19:00. Parking is free and is available directly in front of the studio building.
