Above: Examples of Landon Clay's figure drawings from life, typical of the type of work students will complete in this workshop.
- Recommended level: beginner- to intermediate-level
The scope of the workshop will indeed focus on the basics of drawing three-dimensional form, with the classes divided between practical application and theory. The following is a brief outline of my lesson plan:
Day 1- Introduction of basic color theory:
- Understanding the property of 'value' (light/dark tonality) in the depiction of color and form;
- The role of the light source in the depiction of form: the advantages/disadvantages of various lighting conditions, discussion of what makes a drawing look "flat";
- Exercise: making a 9-step value string in graphite
- In the making of this exercise, the following concepts are covered:
- Various grades of graphite pencils and their properties (from hard graphite to soft graphite)
- Different approaches to mark-making (hatching & cross-hatching, smudging with a blending stump, blending with a paintbrush)
- In the making of this exercise, the following concepts are covered:
- Discussion: Construction of three-dimensional form into simplified "planes"; how a planar concept helps us to move away from thinking of drawing in 2D terms (making an outline around a flat shape) to 3D spatial reasoning (analyzing the angle of each facet/plane of the form relative to the light source)
- Exercise: Drawing a planar "sphere" (the "sphere" is not an actual ball, but a geometric concept of a sphere broken down into simplified planes.)
- If students complete one drawing with time to spare, they can study the sphere model from a different angle/with different lighting.
- Discussion: Basic physics of light
- Law of reflection
- Lambert's law of emission
- Light "fall-off"
- Demonstration: Drawing a full 3D sphere
- During the demo, the following concepts are discussed:
- Light/Shadow terminology
- Edge quality & atmospheric perspective
- Reflection (specular vs. diffuse)
- During the demo, the following concepts are discussed:
- Exercise: Drawing two full 3D sphere studies
- One sphere will be set up so that there is minimal reflected light in the shadows;
- The second sphere will be more difficult, with a greater amount of reflected light in the shadows;
- Discussion: Conceptualizing complex form into geometric primitives
- "Big-form modelling"; conceptualizing 'primary' forms vs. 'secondary' forms;
- Cast shadows, and their behavior & influence from secondary forms
- Exercise: The final day of the workshop concludes with drawing simple still life studies of slightly more challenging objects (cups, teapots, etc.), starting with two preliminary sketches:
- A conceptual sketch, which breaks down the object into basic geometric primitives, and then identifies the major planes;
- An optical sketch, identifying the big tonal masses of light and shadow in the composition
- After these two small thumbnail sketches are completed, students will fully render their still life drawing.
- Introduction of basic color theory:
- The following materials are required for participation in this workshop.
