From Academicism to Impressionism
Join artist and lecturer Zoran Arizanovic as he explores the transition from Academic Art to Impressionism, examining the changing landscape of the nineteenth century and the resulting impact on the modern art world.
The progression from Academic oil painting, which reached its pinnacle in nineteenth century France among painters such as Jean-Léon Gérôme and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, to Impressionism was driven by key technological advancements that enabled greater spontaneity, vibrant colors, and outdoor painting. The invention of pre-mixed oil paints in tubes allowed artists to paint en plein air, while synthetic pigments considerably expanded the color palette, allowing for paintings which were brighter and more expressive than ever before.
Faster-drying paints and leaner mediums supported impasto techniques, replacing the slow, layered glazing characteristic of academic painting methods. Meanwhile, the rise of photography influenced the way painters approached composition, encouraging asymmetry and movement, while portable easels and new brushes facilitated looser, more dynamic brushwork.
These innovations empowered Impressionists like Monet and Pissarro to break from rigid traditions, focusing on light, color, and immediacy, forever transforming the art world. In this lecture, Zoran will examine key differences between these artistic movements, and the ways that the innovations achieved by the Impressionists continue to influence contemporary realist movements today.
