In this 5-day intensive workshop with award-winning landscape painter Kadin Goldberg, students will learn how to simplify the infinitely complex landscape and create luminous, lifelike oil paintings on location. Through various painting exercises, students will travel in and around the picturesque city of Haarlem to explore value and color relationships, compositional design, and how to capture light efficiently.
Painting the landscape outside is incredibly challenging. Kadin will help his students to simplify the experience by breaking down plein air painting into a step-by-step process of smaller, manageable tasks. Each day will begin with a short lecture on a specific topic, followed by a live demonstration. Each consecutive exercise will build upon the previous one to help students become more comfortable painting the landscape outdoors.
Over the course of the week, students will paint a variety of scenes in and around Haarlem, including cityscapes, canals, parks, and the Netherlands’ famous dunes. Kadin will guide his students through both group demonstrations and thorough one-on-one instruction, providing everyone plenty of time to paint competent plein air studies. By the end of this fun and informative course, you will have all the tools necessary to push your art to the next level.
*** PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will take place outdoors. Students will meet at the DARA studio each morning and depart for the day’s painting location as a group. If the weather permits, we will plan to enjoy drinks, refreshments, and a picnic lunch outside. All painting locations will be in the near vicinity of a public restroom. At the end of the day, students are welcome to return to DARA to clean their paintbrushes and store any of their paintings/supplies.
- INCLUDED MATERIALS: DARA will provide each student with the following materials at no additional cost:
- 12 primed canvas panels size 18 x 24 cm;
- 2 primed canvas panels size 24 x 30 cm;
- A portable outdoor easel will be available for everyone, but students are also welcome to bring their own easels if preferred.
The following materials are required for participation in this workshop. Many of the materials listed are common supplies that artists are likely to own already. Included below is also a list of recommended local art shops where supplies can be purchased in Haarlem or in surrounding cities. Do you have any questions about any of the items on this list? Please send us an email at email@example.com and we will be more than happy to help.OIL COLORS:
We generally advise students to use Artist/Professional quality colors instead of the inferior “student-grade” paints. Kadin feels that paints are a very personal and individual thing, and he therefore encourages his students to bring whatever colors and brands they feel most comfortable with.
The minimum oil colors needed for this course are:
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Yellow (or any other similarly bright yellow)
- Naphthol Red (or any other similarly bright red)
- Ultramarine Blue OR Cobalt Blue
For those who would like to use Kadin’s specific palette, he will be using the following colors. All paints are by Gamblin except otherwise specified:
GENERAL PAINTING SUPPLIES:
- Titanium White
- Azo Lemon Yellow (Van Gogh brand)
- Cadmium Yellow Medium
- Yellow Ochre

- Pochade box
- Palette knife
- Odorless mineral spirits (Kadin uses Gamsol by Gamblin)

While students are welcome to bring any brushes they prefer, Kadin primarily paints with flat brushes, and recommends the following:
- At least 1 flat size #6 brush. Kadin’s main brush is size #6 Silver Grand Prix hog bristle brush, which is often the only brush he uses to complete entire paintings.
- Optionally, students may also bring a variety of other flat brushes in small to large sizes, both hog bristles and/or synthetics.
- At least 1 small rigger brush. Kadin uses a Grey Matters Synthetic signing brush size #2.
The following supplies are not strictly needed, but are recommended for students to bring:

DARA reserves the right to substitute instructors and/or models during a class if no alternative is available.
