Course Description
This workshop is a great starting point for beginners who want to learn how to draw the human face with accuracy and confidence. It’s also ideal for experienced artists who wish to deepen your understanding of structure, proportion, and light using academic methods.
The course centres around study from plaster casts after classical sculptures: beautiful and timeless subjects that allow us to focus on the fundamentals of drawing the portrait without the challenges that a live, moving model presents. The tradition of studying plaster casts traces back to ancient Greece and has long been part of classical training in the fine arts.
Throughout the week, you’ll receive step-by-step guidance on how to observe and construct the head. You'll begin with studying the anatomy and structure of individual facial features, then apply your knowledge towards the creation of a complete portrait. Thomas will discuss how academic principles of light logic, planar structure, and edge design will enable you to create a compelling sense of form.
During the final two days, you’ll complete a finished portrait drawing from a sculpture of your choice from DARA’s collection. For those continuing with Thomas's Introduction to Portrait Painting workshop the following week, this drawing will serve as the perfect foundation for your painting studies, helping you to move smoothly from drawing to painting in oils.
By mastering the basics of portrait drawing in a controlled and structured environment, this course will help you to build the skills and confidence to draw and paint from life with greater accuracy and expression.
