- Recommended level: all levels welcome
In this 5-day workshop led by classically trained Florentine painter Giulia Bucciarelli, students will learn to create realistic portraits working alla prima, or wet-into-wet. This bold painting approach was made popular by the Impressionists, and remains highly appealing to today's working representational artists.
Students will understand value and color temperature through a series of guided exercises on drawing with paint, correcting value relationships, accurate color mixing, and paint handling. In addition to these exercises, three different portrait paintings will be completed from life, both from male and female models. Giulia will give live demonstrations the first three mornings of the workshop in order for students to follow her process step-by-step, in addition to a high level of individual instruction and critique.
By the end of this intensive weeklong course, students will be well-equipped with the tools they need to develop their own portraiture further: from learning to measure and draw from life with accuracy, achieve a likeness to the model, mix a variety of flesh tones, and getting correct tonal relationships to convey 3D form. - INCLUDED MATERIALS: DARA will provide students with oil primed linen canvas for the series of exercises to be completed the first two days of the workshop.
The following materials are required for participation in this workshop. Included below is also a list of recommended local art shops where supplies can be purchased in Haarlem or in surrounding cities. To download the Materials List as a PDF document, please click the button above.

ADMISSIONS
Registration is open to students of any nationality, race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age*, medical status, marital or civil status, religion, creed, or political affiliation. (*Please note that applicants under age 18 must have their parent or legal guardian provide express written permission via email that states that the applicant may be enrolled.)
Students may apply by completing an online registration form (available by clicking the "Apply Now" button above.) After submitting a registration form, the student will be sent an email notification within 48 hours as to the status of his or her acceptance in the workshop. The Dutch Atelier of Realist Art (DARA) reserves the right to refuse enrollment to any new or returning students deemed by the studio administration to be out of line with the programme's stated mission and policies, and/or disruptive to the studio and its attendees.
Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and it is therefore advisable for students to sign up for courses early while spaces are available. Spaces are very limited in order to ensure that each student receives a high level of individual attention and one-on-one instruction. Once the workshop has been filled, any subsequent applicants will be placed on a waiting list. In the event that a student cancels his or her registration and/or fails to pay the requisite course fees, the next student on the waiting list will receive the space in the class instead.
WORKING IN THE STUDIO
All students agree to adhere to our Studio Policies as a condition of their continued enrollment in any workshop offered at DARA. Students are expected to maintain a professional working environment at all times by respecting themselves, fellow students, models, guests, and instructors.
Students are expected to arrive to class on time and with the appropriate required materials in order to participate in the workshop. During the course, each student is provided with storage space to store his or her art supplies, artwork, and personal belongings. Please note that all student belongings must be taken home by the last day of the workshop. DARA accepts no responsibility for the damage, loss, or theft of student property, except in cases solely attributable to the misconduct of a DARA staff member.STUDIO CANCELLATIONS
The minimum level of enrollment for this course to run is 4 students. In the event that this enrollment level is not attained, students will be notified 60 days in advance of the start of the course, and will be offered the option of either receiving a full refund* or transferring to a different course of their choosing (provided that space is available.) All refunds are processed within 7 days of studio cancellations.
During the workshop, if a single class session is cancelled for any reason, DARA will notify all students of the cancellation by phone and email. Every effort will be made to schedule a make-up class at a time convenient for the majority of students. Refunds for cancelled class sessions are awarded only in the event that no make-up class is scheduled. DARA reserves the right to substitute instructors and/or models during a class if no alternative is available.
*Please note that in the event of a studio cancellation, DARA is only responsible for refunding the cost of tuition, and not for any of the student's associated expenses, such as travel fare and/or purchase of class materials.STUDENT CANCELLATIONS
Cancellations may be made by email notification to info@dutchartatelier.com. Students who cancel their workshop registration within 14 days of submitting a registration form are entitled to a full refund of fees. All refunds are processed within 7 days of the cancellation date. After the 14-day grace period has passed, the following student cancellation policy applies:- The deposit payment becomes non-refundable.
- If the cancellation is made more than 60 days in advance of the start of the workshop, and the student has already paid the full course fee: the student is entitled to a 50% refund.
- If the cancellation is made more than 30 days in advance of the start of the workshop, and the student has already paid the full course fee: the student is entitled to a 25% refund.
- If the cancellation is made with fewer than 30 days in advance of the start of the workshop: no refunds will be awarded.
In the event that a student drops out of a workshop after the course has already begun, and the date of cancellation falls within the aforementioned 14-day grace period, the student is still required to pay the total cost of services rendered (calculated by the number of class dates the student was in attendance). The student will be refunded the remaining balance of fees.
