Top: Examples of Edoardo Durdin's plein air landscape studies, typical of the type of work students in this course will follow.
- Recommended level: some painting experience is recommended
>> Please note: This workshop largely takes place outdoors. Participants will need to be able to walk short distances to each painting location while carrying their equipment & gear.
Imaginative realist painter Edoardo Durdin invites you to join this special 5-day plein air workshop to learn from the master of color: Mother Nature. Working en plein air refers to the practice of painting the landscape directly outdoors, which familiarizes you with principles like proportion, tonality, edge, and color within a setting that is a little less controlled than your usual studio space. We will study the behaviors of light and its impact on each object within a setting or around a subject matter.
The first day of the workshop begins in the studio, followed by outdoor excursions to four different locations, providing you with different challenges to equip you with what you might encounter outside in your own practice. You will learn to ‘read’ colors as they are, understand their relationship to each other, and mix color accurately. This will enable you to recreate what’s in front of you and capture the curiosities within a landscape, that can make it so charming to bring back into your home.
While Durdin will share his approach to working with a fully expanded color palette, students may also opt to work with a limited amount of colors based on the Zorn Palette. For painters with less experience, this simplifies the transition to painting directly from nature while also learning about color unification. Throughout this course, Durdin will demonstrate his full plein air painting process as well as working one-on-one with students, as they are encouraged to push their considerations of composition and finish. - INCLUDED MATERIALS: For those who do not have an outdoor easel, DARA will provide one.
Included below is a list of local art shops where supplies can be purchased in Haarlem or in surrounding cities. Some supplies are also available to purchase directly at the studio, and are listed below. To download the Materials List as a PDF document, please click the button above.
