- Recommended level: all levels welcome, some drawing experience is ideal
Learn to paint dynamic portraits from life in this intensive 5-day master class with visiting artist Danny Ferland. Trained at the Janus Collaborative School of Art in New York City, Danny's unique approach to painting the portrait in oils is reminiscent of a pointillist technique, in which he lays in a mosaic of color "tiles" to bring his paintings to a stunning finish.
Danny will give a live painting demonstration on the first two mornings of the workshop, giving students direct access to his unique painting approach and the opportunity to watch every step of his process. Starting with an initial block-in of the head using vine charcoal, the drawing will then be sealed off with a burnt umber underpainting before progressing to the use of a full-color palette.
Students will then practice this approach themselves over the remainder of the course, completing two portrait paintings from life from a male and female model. Each student will receive a high level of individual attention and one-on-one critique from Danny, who will instruct his students on drawing, color mixing, and paint application in order to achieve a convincing likeness to the model. - INCLUDED MATERIALS: DARA provides prepared & toned fine-weave linen canvas (size 30x40cm and 40x50cm)
The following materials are required for participation in this workshop.
On the final page is a list of local art shops where supplies can be purchased in Haarlem or in surrounding cities. Some supplies are also available to purchase directly at the studio, and are listed below.
