The Creative Process
In this lecture, fine artist and portrait painter, Bianca Berends will talk about the creative process. Bianca is known as someone who challenges the romanticized notion of waiting for inspiration, emphasizing the importance of daring and perseverance in creating art. In her celebrated book The Art of Being an Artist, she has been extraordinarily candid about the hurdles she faces and the problems that arise when working on a new series of paintings. By focusing on key themes from the book she will help us explore the essential elements of the creative journey.
Bianca says: ‘At the moment I am working on a series of Summer Cityscapes —a series of colourful, figurative paintings. I love pushing colour, working with bold brushstrokes, and exploring how the play of light and shadow can transform everyday scenes into vibrant paintings.’
This is an excellent opportunity for all artists who want to further develop their own creative process and more generally to anyone who is interested in creativity. All are welcome!

Bianca Berends was born in the Netherlands and has been living and working for many years on Curaçao, whilst also spending part of the year in Amsterdam. Colourful, sun-drenched paintings are her specialty, marked by loose brushwork and bold use of colour.
In the United States, she received several awards from the Portrait Society of America. Her paintings have been shown in prominent museums and galleries, including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Kröller-Müller Museum, Museum De Fundatie, the Noordbrabants Museum, and the Curaçaosch Museum. In 2021, her book In Het Atelier was published. It became a bestseller and appeared in English in 2024. It received third prize in the Art category for the Foreword Indies Book Award and at The American Book Fest Award 2024 she was a finalist for the Best Cover Award. |
Studio doors open at 18:15 for a welcome reception, and Bianca's lecture and Q&A session begins at 19:00. Parking is free and is available directly in front of the studio building.
