Exploring Composition & Design: Lecture and Demonstration
In this lecture and drawing demonstration, visiting artist Mina Mohtasham will explore the subject of pictorial composition. She will show how to approach the subject of portraiture from a live model, while considering the tonal study as a means of discovering the design elements within a drawing.
Mina will discuss the importance of understanding composition as a design within the drawing itself, as opposed to something that is solely derived from nature. She will encourage her audience to think about the way our eye moves through an image, and how this is affected by elements such as edge quality, contrast and texture. She will also reflect on the limitations of artist materials, and how artists can use the value range available in order to evoke the impression of what we see, rather than trying to directly copy nature.
By the end of this lecture, Mina says that her aim 'is to show how the academic study can be applied to a larger context and inform studio work beyond the classroom.'
This will be a fantastic opportunity for those who want a better understanding of composition in their own artistic practice. It will be especially helpful for students who want to develop their ideas for their own personal work outside of the classroom. For those who delight in viewing art rather than creating it, a deeper comprehension of composition can deepen our appreciation and enjoyment. All are welcome!
