Course Description
Step into the world of painting professional portraits on commission in this hands-on five-day workshop. This course will be valuable for anyone who wants to capture the character and personality of a model, and is especially designed for those who paint professionally or would like to enter this field. But whether you’re considering a career as a portrait painter or simply want to create a meaningful portrait of a loved one, this workshop will provide the skills you need to bring life and presence into your paintings.
On the first day, you’ll focus on a series of quick sketches, learning to capture the "essence" of the model. Thibault will provide in-depth demonstrations, along with a written and oral profile of the model and a physical characterisation to match. This exercise helps you capture not only the model’s literal likeness, but also their personality, presence, and aesthetic preferences, just as you would in a professional commission for a client.
From day two onwards, you’ll move on to your main portrait, progressing step-by-step through drawing to a multi-layer painting process executed fully from life. Thibault will provide hands-on feedback and guidance throughout, emphasising technical development and sharing his professional insights into the key elements of a successful portrait commissioned portrait: accuracy, psychology, and presence.
Learn the tools of the trade from a professional portrait painter: in addition to painting critiques, Thibault will share the ins and outs of painting on commission, from networking with clients to fairly pricing your work. Finish this workshop with both a beautiful portrait in hand and the business know-how to take on any commission with confidence!
