The Classical Tradition:

Materials & Techniques of the Ancient World
How did ancient paintings survive for thousands of years? And why do they still feel so alive today?

Far from being purely intuitive, ancient painters were deeply knowledgeable about their materials. In Roman Egypt, artists created the striking Fayum portraits using encaustic painting, mixing pigment with hot wax to produce a luminous and durable surface. In Pompeii, wall paintings were executed in buon fresco, where colour is applied directly onto wet plaster, becoming part of the wall itself. Fine details were often added later using a secco techniques, or egg tempera for precision.

To preserve their work, artists even applied protective coatings such as ganosis, a thin layer of wax that helped maintain colour and surface quality over time. These methods reveal a sophisticated balance between artistry and material knowledge, one that continues to inform painting practices today.

In addition to exploring these traditional methods, this lecture also includes a practical demonstration of preparing and applying egg tempera, offering insight into one of the most enduring painting techniques in Western art. It’s an opportunity not only to understand these processes, but to consider how they might be explored in your own work.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your technical knowledge, or experiment with new approaches in your practice: this lecture offers a deep dive into the artistic tools and methods of the ancient world.
