The Classical Tradition:

From Antiquity to the Present
When you picture Greek sculpture, do you imagine pristine white marble, or vividly painted figures? Was “Greek” art actually made in what we now call Greece, or across a wider ancient world stretching as far as modern-day Iraq? And did the Romans merely copy the Greeks, or did they transform what they inherited? These are just a few of the assumptions we’ll examine in this lecture on Classical art.

Academies within the atelier movement focus on representational drawing and painting, grounded in a fine arts tradition that spans over two millennia. Students often begin by copying works by Charles Bargue, or drawing from plaster casts - practices rooted in what we call the “Classics.” This tradition, shaped by Greek and Roman artists, was revived during the Renaissance and inspired figures such as Leonardo da Vinci.

But what do we really mean by “Classical” art? Was it always concerned with ideal beauty? And how closely do our modern academic practices reflect the intentions of the ancient world?

As artists working within this lineage, a deeper understanding of the history, context, and misconceptions about classical art can fundamentally reshape how we approach our own practice. In this lecture, we will trace the origins of these traditions and reconsider what they meant in their own time, and what they can mean for us today.

The foundations of the skills we pursue in contemporary academies were laid in antiquity. What did artists of the ancient world understand about form, beauty, and life - and what might they still have to teach us?

This lecture is accompanied by a follow-up presentation by Zoran Arizanovic, who will discuss the techniques and artist materials which were used during the same period. There is a discount package deal for attendees who join both lectures. More Info >
