William Bouguereau and the Académie Julian: Lecture
In this lecture, artist and art historian Nancy ter Horst will explore the influence of William-Adolphe Bouguereau through his position as an instructor at the Parisian Académie Julian. Bouguereau (1825 - 1905), an artist in the nineteenth century French academic tradition, was at the heart of a movement that has had powerful and far-reaching effects in the world of fine arts.
The Académie Julian was the first art academy to allow women access to the same education as offered to men. It was a place that many artists, now famous household names, preferred over the stricter École des Beaux-Arts, and where they met and influenced each other. Among the academy's alumni were Alphonse Mucha, Henri Matisse, John Singer Sargent, Marie Bashkirtseff, and Cecilia Beaux.
Notably, the Académie Julian played a significant role in the flourishing of several Avante-garde movements, including the Nabis, Impressionism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau. Imagine being in the same room with the likes of Bonnard, Vuillard, and Mucha while Gauguin and van Gogh casually pass by to talk art! Bouguereau taught them all, and was like a spider in the web that connects most of the famous painters of the 20th and early 21st century.
Therefore, taking Bouguereau as the central figure in this narrative, Nancy ter Horst will help us explore how an art academy can concentrate artistic geniuses in one place and become the motor behind Avante-Garde movements.
