REGISTRATION CLOSED Alla Prima Portrait Painting21 to 24 April 2026INSTRUCTOR | Danny Ferland
HOURS | 9:30 to 16:30 (lunch from 12:30 to 13:30) - 24 hours of studio lessons LANGUAGE | English TUITION FEE | €640,- LIMIT | 16 students RECOMMENDED LEVEL | This workshop is recommended for artists who have prior experience painting from life in oils. |
Course Description
Alla prima means “at the first attempt,” and is the spontaneous and direct method of finishing a painting wet-in-wet in a single session. This workshop offers an inspiring and transformative deep dive into the art of painting directly from life, where you will learn how to create lively, accurate portraits in oil painted from the model in one sitting.
The course begins with a strong focus on structure, composition, and drawing to establish a solid likeness. Once the preliminary drawing is complete, you will pivot directly into spontaneous painting techniques, exploring colour mixing, paint handling, and vibrant brushwork. Danny will demonstrate how to apply bold, mosaic-like brushstrokes in which you place “tiles” of colour to capture luminous flesh tones.
You will also explore anatomy, variation in paint thickness and application, and surface control to create depth and a three-dimensional effect. Thin passages will define shadows, while thicker impastos will highlight illuminated areas, producing the illusion of sculptural form and lifelike presence.
By the end of the workshop, you will have completed five alla prima portraits from live models, each one deepening your confidence in observation, colour harmony, and expressive yet controlled mark-making.

Danny Ferland
Danny Ferland was born in 1975 in Québec City, Québec. He was self taught for many years before discovering the magnificence of figurative art during a European trip in 2002.
Danny moved to New York City after being accepted into the Janus Collaborative School of Art in 2008, where he studied exclusively from the live model. After months of dedication, he realized that his main interest lied in portraiture, one of the most complex and demanding forms of art.
